Some of the lives I’ve recently escaped to:
Author Sacken’s novel, Behind the Lens, is like being on a high-speed roller coaster ride - a short climb to the pinnacle, plunging you down fast. And just when you come out of one inverted loop, there’s another, before you level out. Tense and riveting, the twists and turns kept me turning the pages and put me in a country 7,000 miles away, in Afghanistan. Protagonist and photojournalist, Annie Hawkins, not only sees it from behind her camera lens, she’s living through it. Burqa, hijab, learning to shoot, learning to walk and look inconspicuous, saving lives, Taliban and ISIS uprisings, PTSD . . . it’s all there. A realistic fiction and a great read.
What a heartrending story author Osborne’s True Grace is! It gripped me from the very beginning and didn’t let go. Besides being immersed in the setting, with characterizations of the Roaring Twenties, specifically the Harlem Renaissance, I was totally empathetic to the protagonist’s enormous challenges and all that she had to endure. With her husband gone, she had to figure out a way to provide for her five children, an extremely daunting task that seemed destined to fail. This is a story that embodies the experiences of racism, poverty, trauma, violence, with an indomitable focus on the true testament of a mother’s love. Tough to put down and worth the read.
It’s 1953 when we first enter the world of author Jonas’ novel, Hall of Deception, a post-
WWII era with all the characteristics and trends that go with America’s golden age. The protagonist, Dee, is hired to tutor the six-year-old niece of Mr. Roth, the heir and owner of Rothmorton Hall in Massachusetts. If Mr. Roth’s extroverted ways weren’t enough for unassuming Dee, something nefarious is going on at the mansion, as frightening and disturbing events occur. Dee cannot deny the affection she feels for Mr. Roth and his niece and is eager to learn who wants to harm them. The parallel to the classic novel, Jane Eyre, was strongly felt as I eagerly turned the pages of this captivating novel to its final conclusion.
Author Groves’ memoir is a provocative book for anyone who has had a controlling parent who was impossible to please. YOU’LL SEE is as much a story about emotional abuse as it is about self-discovery. As adults, we try to protect ourselves by recognizing traits of narcissism, but for children, it can be a long and harrowing journey. Inspirational and heart-rending.
No Where Near Goodbye realistically portrays the callings and sacrifices that can dominate one's life and the effect it has on those closest to them. Doctor Emma Blake is on a heart wrenching and grave mission to help find a cure to a deadly disease, a devotedness that borders on obsession for reasons that go back to her childhood. My empathy for her husband and daughter mirrored that for conflicted Emma. Author Conrey has written a story that will make you think about all the choices we’ve had to make in our own lives—some good, some bad, but never easy. A thought-provoking novel with memorable characters that will surely pull at your heartstrings.
