“Books are uniquely portable magic.” - Stephen King
I’ve been all over the place these past few weeks…
Niagara-on-the-Lake
Charlie and Simm agree to look into the mysterious death of a friend’s brother and the disappearance of his inheritance money. The setting in Smoke and Secrets is the scenic Niagara-on-the-Lake. But instead of enjoying the charming sights, their sleuthing takes them through a dark, underground tunnel. Instead of wineries is poisonous whiskey. In place of serenity, trouble. The kind that can get them killed. Believing the murderer could be among them adds tension and challenge for crime fiction lovers as author McCarthy deftly drops clues that will keep you guessing, delivering a fast, enjoyable read. And just when you think you’ve got it all figured out…think again.
Versaille, France (in the 17th century)
A teenage girl with dreams of grandeur suddenly finds herself living the dream, but as in real life, drama is at every turn. Step into a whole new and different world in another century. The opulence of royal life, the details of the beautiful gowns and shoes - Egyptian silk and jewels, the hairstyles and dialogue: "I look forward to a rollicking and convivial discourse." And my favorite of all: "Who would allow a young woman to choose her husband? So much can go wrong." Williams' descriptive writing easily placed me in Versailles, France during the reign of Louis XIV. A well-researched historical novel that is as transporting as it is entertaining.
Portland, Maine
Lynnett hasn’t seen her adult daughter, Ruby, in three years. When the family matriarch dies and the family members gather in Portland, Maine for her funeral, emotions and discord are at its fullest. Fraught with misunderstandings and resentment, Lynnett tries to make sense of what went wrong and, as with all self-reflection, she must go deep. She longs to be close with her daughter and not repeat the estranged relationship she had with her own mother. Author Hackett has written a touching tale of a mother and daughter’s redemption and the healing power of forgiveness. A moving Women’s Fiction with a mystical element.
Thrilled that Elizabeth’s Mountain was a Maxy Award Finalist.

Lucille Guarino has crafted a poignant and well-written literary treasure dedicated to powerful female friendships and the supportive family ties that get them through the worst moments in their lives. This novel is filled with unforgettable characters like Suellen and Teagan, her best friend and closest confidante. I love the robust character evolution portrayed throughout the book. Every character is fully realized and authentic. Suellen, in particular, is a strong protagonist whose character arc will create an unforgettable read for readers. During her inspirational journey, Suellen learns a lot about loving herself, appreciating the crucial relationships around her, and tapping into her inner strength to confront the trials in her life.
